Before you even start looking at the Ads Manager, you need to have a plan. A highly targeted strategy will increase your ad’s impact while maximizing your budget. For each campaign that you’re going to create, you should be able to answer:

  • What services am I specifically promoting?
  • Who am I targeting?
  • What is their pain point, and what objections will they have?
  • Which stage of the funnel are they in exactly?
  • What is the goal of my campaign?
  • What do I want to say?
  • What images do I want to share?
  • Do I want leads, brand awareness, engagement, and website traffic?

Step 2: Choose Your Campaign Objective

Now that you have your strategy in place, it’s time to begin building out your campaign. When you set it up, you will have 11 different options to choose between. Some of them include engagement, traffic, brand awareness, and conversions. Depending on what you select, Facebook will optimize ad placements based on your chosen objective.
You will want to select a campaign objective that closely matches your goals. For example if you are a new business with limited brand recall, choosing a brand awareness campaign may yield positive results for your company. Step 3: Determine Your Budget

Now it’s time to determine your budget. Facebook Ads run like an auction. So in addition to choosing how much you would like to spend, you will have to choose how Facebook will spend your budget, in order to achieve better success in the action. 

You will have the option to turn on the “Advantage Campaign Budget” feature. If you choose the ACB budget feature, Facebook will distribute your budget across ad sets to get more results depending on your delivery optimization choices and bid strategy. You can then decide if you want to split your budget daily, or across the lifetime of your ad campaign. 

Step 4: Set Up Your Adset

Now it’s time to set up your adset! Here you will choose when, and to whom your ads will be targeted to. As you create your adset you will need to provide Facebook with demographic, geographic, interests, and other behaviors of your target audience.

The first step will be to determine where you will be driving your targeting traffic. Depending on the campaign objective selected you will have a variety of options to choose from.

You will then choose the dates and times your campaign will run. We always recommend running your campaigns on a schedule, targeting the times when your audience is most likely to be active. This will maximize your budget, and ensure you are only delivering your ad when your target audience will be ready to engage. 

Finally, you will add your detailed targeting information. This is any specific targeting feature about your audience that can help the Facebook algorithm optimize how your ad is delivered. Some options include

  • Custom audiences: This targets specific users that have taken a specific action from your Facebook Page, or areas like Instagram, website, or an email list.
  • Lookalike audiences: Which replicate qualities from your custom audience
  • Location targeting: Targeting based on a geographic location.
  • Interest/behavior targeting: Targeting based on lifestyle, interests or other behaviors.

Step 5: Create Your Ad

Now that we’ve built a strong foundation, you’re ready to create your ad. Your ad is made up of three parts:

  • Image: There are several different formats you can use when setting up your ad, including carousel, static images, and video. You will want to test which of these options your target audience will respond to. Some of our clients find success with video ads, while another client’s audience engages more with a static image and graphics. Either way, your imagery should be compelling and dynamic. 
  • Copy: High quality, purposeful copy is what will keep your audience engaged after your image draws their attention. Ideally, your copy should include a headline sentence of no more than 175 characters, and a strong offer or CTA at the end. Test different lengths of copy with your audience, and see what they respond to the best. 
  • Call To Action: You will choose a CTA button with a link to where you will be sending your audience. This will be paired with a small headline and description. Your call to action button should be informative and eye-catching in order to compel your audience to take action.
