We’re starting the new year off with new ideas. The concept of meeting up with someone local whom we feel is inspiring over coffee, felt like a no-brainer. Once a month, a member of the SSCo. team will grab coffee with someone who inspires them and conducts a Q+A. I decided to kick things off with Terra’s Bloom Box this month!
Have you ever wondered what it looks like when a passion and opportunity meet? Well, it looks a lot like a bloom box. A bloom box is something that Terra and her boyfriend, Darius, create on the regular by taking gorgeous cedar wood for the boxes and Terra’s green thumb for the cacti and succulents. We talked about how they got their start, what it’s like to have a small business and advice for those wanting to start their own business.
Kaitlyn Cook: Why have you chosen to build your small business in Orlando?
Terra’s Bloom Box: Orlando, The city beautiful! My boyfriend and I currently live in Orlando and love the city vibes. The community is amazing and I love to see small businesses working together.
KC: What does your typical weekend look like?
TBB: My typical weekend now consists of heading down to the Sanford Farmers Market every Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM. You can also catch me working in my succulent garden and prepping orders.
KC: Where is your favorite local hang?
TBB: Does my greenhouse count?! In our spare time, we do enjoy going to Lebron’s Indoor Batting Cages. Even though I leave with a bruise every time, it’s a great way to let out some energy and have some fun!
KC: Can you give me a little background on how Terra’s Bloom Box came to be?
TBB: It all ignited when my best friend got married. Her wedding favors were cute ceramic pots with a single succulent snuggled right in. Of course being the plant hoarder I am, I had to take not only one but two of those home with me! Once I got the hang of how it worked and the succulents started shooting out blooms, I was instantly hooked. From that point on, my boyfriend, Darius, pushed me to do something with my plant hoarding and new found love for succulents & cacti. This leads us to Terra’s Bloom Box, succulent & cacti arrangements handmade with love. Darius creates the beautiful cedar boxes and I plant them full of different varieties of succulents & cacti.
KC: Have you always had a passion for plants and succulents?
TBB: Definitely. My Dad always had a garden of some sort. Plants have always been a part of my life growing up. When I was introduced to the succulent & cactus world — game over! I fell in love.
KC: What is one of your favorite planters or arrangements to date?
TBB: The first table runner Darius and I created. It was love at first sight. Succulents and cacti packed into a long and skinny handmade wooden box. It was dreamy. Our Table Runner Bloom Box is still my favorite to create!
KC: What is your ultimate goal when it comes to your business?
TBB: Making people happy. Plant therapy. Spreading the fire and getting others interested and addicted to succulents or anything green! It’s a great therapeutic hobby. There are lots of people out there who suffer from different ailments. I have one of my own… anxiety. The moment I put my hands in the soil and plant something, my mind is free. I can create something and forget about any worries or troubles. I hope people can dig in and see the benefits of having their own garden as well.
KC: What is your favorite thing about owning a small business?
TBB: I currently work full-time in HR and now that I’ve created my own business, there’s nothing quite like meeting your own goals that you set and putting your dreams into reality. It’s so rewarding to see people connect with you and your love for something. It’s also a great way to meet new people, learn new things, join a community that loves what you love.
KC: What advice would you give to women who want to start their own company?
TBB: GO FOR IT. Work hard and dream big. Forward is forward. It doesn’t matter how fast or how slow you go, just keep going! You will have to conquer fears, hurdles, and dead-ends but there’s nothing more rewarding than owning your own business.
KC: What can we expect next from Terra’s Bloom Box?
TBB: I plan to move toward arrangements for weddings and different events. In March, another good friend of mine is getting married at The Acre. It’s a gorgeous lush green venue. She has chosen Terra’s Bloom Box to make all of her centerpieces. I hope this puts me in the right direction and opens new doors. I’m thrilled to see where Terra’s Bloom Box will be this time next year!
