When sitting down to write, I realized I didn’t know how to start this blog post. Not just any blog, this blog — about how to start a blog post. Writing a blog about writing a blog is difficult since it implies that every blog is the same.

Each blog takes different approaches, requires different insight and needs different skills. We each bring our own experiences, ideas and knowledge to writing. Some things will naturally come easier to others.

For me, writing about topics like health and fitness are easier since I have a background in health and fitness, and the only background knowledge I have about plumbing is that I know that in Australia toilets flush backward. That sort of knowledge can only get you so far, especially when it comes to writing blog posts for clients.

With that being said, I’ve created this ultimate guide on how to start a blog post:

If you’re like me and do not know a certain topic, research it. There are a number of easy ways you can research a topic. The obvious one is doing a Google search. Just make sure you land on good, reliable sites with solid information.

Sometimes, the best way to do this is to land on Wikipedia, scroll down to the bottom and look through their sources. Wikipedia, despite some disclaimers, is very reliable; but to be safe, their own sources at the bottom of a Wiki page are even more reliable since they have a stringent vetting process – use these.

Keyword research is also very important for SEO purposes and to make sure that once you have completed a blog post, your post will rank well on Google. Google Adwords is what you should use to do your keyword research.

Once you make a Google Adwords account, use the Keyword Planner tool to find keywords pertaining to your topic. You can also localize your search results to find a keyword in your area.

Be Direct

When writing, be direct. Be direct and affable. Affable and funny. You want to pull readers in with good writing, but not scare them away with large sentences that are too confusing.

This also relates to structure. Small paragraphs look better than a convoluted chunk of words. Large block texts don’t read well on a screen.

Having headers speaks for itself, but it’s an important part of a blog post. People go to your post for a reason. Maybe that reason is they are only interested in a certain aspect of your topic, so they scroll down to find a useful piece of information.

For example, what if you want to know how to start a blog post and you stumble on this blog post, you may only be interested in the section about “headers.” So you scroll down and read this section. Headers are important – use them.

I hope this blog post was helpful about how to start a blog post. I hope you’re able to start a blog post right now! No, seriously. What are you waiting for?
